Upper Green River Valley
The Green River Valley of Wyoming is fast becoming the major natural gas-producing region of the United States. It accounts for 2.5 percent of the nation's consumption and more than half of Wyoming's total production. This vital portion of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem contains Continental America's longest big game migration route and the largest mule deer herd in the U.S. Air and water quality in these areas are severly compromised and affecting much of Wyoming, Northern Colorado and Southern Montana.
The Bureau of Land Management has approved the development of 700 well pads in the Pinedale Anticline Project, an area containing historical big game migration routes between Grand Teton, Yellowstone and Wyoming's Red Desert, with critical winter range and spring birthing areas. Expanded development, including year-round drilling, calls for 4,400 more wells, almost nine times the number currently in place, drilled at a rate of up to 232 a year.
