Oil Shale

Oil Shale is currently an important focus for EcoFlight and conservation groups in the Rocky Mountain West. We have been working closely with the Western Energy Project on how best to show this landscape in Colorado, Utah and Southern Wyoming in terms of the threat of this very dirty fossil fuel. In 2009 we flew Senator Mark Udall and later Senator Michael Bennet over proposed oil shale development as well as the Roan Plateau and the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge in Colorado.

Considered the next big site for coal bed methane development in Wyoming is the Red Desert, the largest potential BLM Wilderness area in the state. It is one of the finest high desert ecosystems in the nation supporting endangered wildlife including sage grouse, pronghorn antelope, pygmy rabbit,  and ferruginous hawk.
